Happy Canada Day! So Canada is now 149 years old, eh?. On July 1, 1867, three British territories in North America -- Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada, consisting of Upper (Ontario) and Lower Canada (Québec) -- became a kingdom (with the British monarch as head of state of course) in its own right. The newly formed kingdom was called "The Dominion of Canada". The other provinces and territories joined the Confederation after, with Newfoundland being the last to join in 1949. With the passage of the Canada Act of 1982, the country became simply known as "Canada". Canada, along with 15 other fully independent member states (United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, Papua New Guinea, etc.), forms part of the Commonwealth realm with Queen Elizabeth II as their own head of state.
